William E. Knuth, 1928. Professor of Music and founding Division Chair of Creative Arts. BA (1924), MA (1925) University of Washington; Ed.D. 1934) University of California, Berkeley. Knuth, a bassoonist, joined the faculty in 1928 as a professor of music and chair of the Music Department. Knuth fostered the Music Federation which was a “union” of faculty and students that controlled music performances by students on campus. Knuth coined the term “creative arts” in developing a Division of Creative Arts to join music, drama, art, industrial arts, and radio-television-film within a single working unit and became its director in 1947. He was behind the design of the Creative Arts building, the first of its kind in the California State University System. Retired in June 1967. Died on December 28, 1987.
