Sam Goldman: Sports Information Officer

Samuel N. Goldman, 1957. Sports Information Officer from 1957 to 1970 and returned in 1986 for another run. AA from City College of San Francisco, BA Journalism SJSU; MA (1960) History, Educational Administration Credential (1960) San Francisco State University. Goldman, a journalist working for the San Francisco Call-Bulletin, was taking classes at San Francisco State, when he was hired as first Sports Information Director in 1948. One Saturday he was on campus and took a break from studying to walk across campus and watch a football game. He ran into photographer Ted Ellsworth (husband of journalism professor Blanche Ellsworth) as he photographed the game. Ellsworth introduced Goldman to Verducci and he was hired on the spot. Goldman remembered, “Many schools are nothing more than football factories... at SF State, the football program was part of the educational institution.” He continued “San Francisco State was known as one of the premiere teacher-training institutions in the United States and one of the areas in which teacher-training was outstanding was in the area of physical training and athletics.” Retired in about 2006 and gave material to the University Archives.
