Samuel Ichiye Hayakawa (1906–1992) served as Acting President of San Francisco State College beginning in December 1968 and as President from 1969 to 1973. A noted semanticist and author of Language in Action (1941), he led the university during a period of significant student protest and institutional change. After retiring, he served as a U.S. Senator from 1976 to 1982.
