Lawrence Ianni, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs (Portrait)

Dr. Lawrence Ianni served as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at San Francisco State University (SFSU) from 1978 to 1987. He originally joined SFSU in 1975 as Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs and was named Provost following a national search. His prior experience included leadership roles at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he was Faculty Labor Relations Coordinator and chair of both the English Department and University Senate. Known for his balanced leadership and thoughtful decision-making, Ianni oversaw key academic planning efforts at SF State, including the development of a more structured General Education curriculum and an academic master plan. Ianni was respected across the campus community for his fairness and long-term vision. While some viewed his budget decisions as difficult, many faculty and administrators considered him principled and effective. His support for equity programs earned him a special award recognizing his commitment to educational fairness.
