Samuel Ichiye Hayakawa (1906–1992) was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, the eldest of four children. He later became a noted semanticist and served as Acting President of San Francisco State College in 1968 and President from 1969 to 1973. After retiring, he was elected to the U.S. Senate, serving from 1976 to 1982.
