Midfield Collision, Cox Stadium, 1967

About This Item

Players from San Francisco State College and their opponents collide at midfield during a 1967 game at Cox Stadium. Gators in dark jerseys, including number 26, fight for control as defenders in white uniforms—numbers 22, 32, 40, and 41 visible—close in from all sides. The ball carrier is taken down amid a tangle of helmets and arms, while spectators watch from the bleachers under afternoon sunlight. The image captures the intensity and contact that defined late-1960s collegiate football.
