About This Item
Walt Jamond’s friendly voice graced numerous Bay Area radio stations over the course of a lengthy career, many years of which were spent on the overnight shift. He was a mainstay on KROW in the 1950’s, during which he was also a popular master of ceremonies and made numerous television appearances.
In the early 60’s, his overnight “Quiet Hour” show was a fixture on KABL.
Jamond’s work was found all over the Bay Area radio dial, with stops including KABL, KQBY, KRE/KPAT, KNBA and KMPX.
This portion of a newscast on KMPX came about a month before the end of the station's "Big Band" era at 106.9 on the FM dial. It was retrieved from a low-speed "logger" tape found in the Bay Area Radio Museum and Hall of Fame archives.
There are several notable elements: first, Jamond begeins the newscast saying, "Good morning" before delivering the time as 1:07. Later references to the day's stock market activity would seem to indicate the time was actrually 1:07 PM.
This fragment of the newscast ends with Jamond shifting into "personal storytelling" mode as he delivers an item about hikers being stfruck by lighting at Yosemite National Park.
