About This Item

The December 1943 disappearance of a B-24 bomber remained an unsolved mystery until 1960, when a ranger on a mapping expedition in the rugged backcountry of Kings Canyon National Park came across wreckage.

KCBS newsman Fred Goerner accompanied the ranger back to the crash site, and he and colleague Dave McElhatton produced this documentary. It would win a 1961 award from Sigma Delta Chi (now the Society of Professional Journalists). KCBS also prodded government officials to name the hitherto-unnamed lake after Lt. Robert Hester, the co-pilot of the ill-fated flight and the only Californian among the crew.

A reel of 1/4" audio tape containing this broadcast is held in the archives of the Bay Area Radio Musuem and Hall of Fame and was digitized by volunteer Andrew Welburn.
