About This Item

Franklin Mieuli (1920-2010) was probably best known in the Bay Area as the colorful figure who owned the Warriors basketball team for many years. But Mieuli, who was inducted into the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame in 2007, had widespread interests in broadcasting.

Among his accomplishments, he produced the English-language radio coverage of the 1960 Winter Olympics at Squaw Valley. Mieuli's Olympic Radio Network provided roundups several times a day as well as live coverage of select events. The broadcasts were carried on the BBC, Armed Forces Radio and Television, and numerous US stations.

This portion of the US-Canada final round hockey game was found on a reel of audio tape contributed by Mieuli's son Peter and held in the Bay Area Radio Museum and Hall of Fame archives. It includes the entire second period of a game won by the US 2-1 en route to the country's first-ever Olympic gold medal in hockey, an event later referred to as "The First 'Miracle on Ice'".
