Sonoma State-Cal Poly Football, 1992
About This Item
Sonoma State University's dramatic 1992 comeback football victory against Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo is remembered as one of the greatest wins in the history of the now-dormant Sonoma State football program.
The Cossacks, as they were then known, trailed by 16 points with 10 minutes to play before quarterback Daryl Fortenberry led the comeback for a 36-35 final score. The win elevated Sonoma State to #9 in the national Division II rankings.
This recording of the final minutes of the game showcases the work of longtime Santa Rosa radio broadcaster Merle Ross, born Merle Rossman (1928-2021). Ross was inducted into the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame in 2026.
The digital audio file was provided by Ross's family.
