Franklin Pearcy Newscast KABL 1964
Franklin Pearcy Newscast KABL 1964
About This Item
This newscast aired about four years after legendary Dallas broadcaster Gordon McLendon purchased Oakland's KROW and re-launched it as an easy-listening station, KABL.
McLendon was a noted innovator. In the case of this newscast, McLendon claimed to have research showing that the long-held practice of airing newscasts at the top or bottom of the hour didn't make sense. Citing that research, KABL programmed two afternoon newscasts at 5:23 and 6:09 pm.
Among the items in this newscast, Franklin Pearcy reports on Republican Party reaction to Senator Barry Goldwater's "extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice" speech at the Republican National Convention in San Francisco and on discussions about a possible San Francisco bid for a World's Fair in 1970-1971.
