KPLS/Santa Rosa First Broadcast 1964
KPLS/Santa Rosa First Broadcast 1964
About This Item
When Santa Rosa's financially-troubled KJAX went off the air in 1962, few foresaw that it would take more than two years for the station to return to the airwaves under new ownership.
Indiana-based Polaris Broadcasting paid a bargain-basement $2500 for the station. At 11:50 a.m. (a time chosen to match the station's frequency on the AM dial) on April 19, 1964, the station was reborn as KPLS. This is a complete recording of the station's first two hours of broadcasting.
Touting its all-male air staff as "The Six Swinging Gentlemen", KPLS would air a Top 40 format.
Polaris would sell the station less than two years later, another chapter in a ccomplicated history for a station that would vanish permanently in 1999.
