About this collection

The Hushidar Mortezaie Collection is provided by the Los Angeles-based Iranian artist and fashion designer Hushidar Mortezaie. At the age of three, Mortezaie moved with his family from Iran to the Bay Area, where he was raised and educated. In 1994, he moved to New York City to work in fashion full-time with his long-time friend and collaborator Michael Sears. Mortezaie’s work spans the mediums of textile, collage, graphic design, painting, and fashion. As a fashion designer and visual artist, he combines these varied mediums into installation-like tableaus that create a political pop art world of satire and artifice. Through this work, a powerful visual language comes forth, inspiring a burgeoning generation of Iranian American immigrants to take pride in their culture, while maintaining a critical eye on its past, present, and future. Mortezaie’s generous contribution to the Iranian Diaspora Archive demonstrates the creativity and influence of the Iranian diaspora in the arts.
