Bus Vogue

About This Item

Complex and colorful illustration capturing the intricacies of Mortezaie’s new Los Angeles life. Hot sunrays beating down, clouds of illicit smoke create a haze, while an Adonis-like figure sits above amongst the “Holywood” sign. Two versions of “Orpheus 5” are picture, one toking and another waiting with a “small brown f*g” bag at a bus stop. Near the transit stop is a houseless woman reading “Facist.”

Story
Part of a project with Guita Tahmassebi created in 2007, this work was part and parcel of a play and manifesto about Mortezaie coming and living in LA. It wrestles with the oppressive and damaging culture that surrounds LGBTQ+ culture in West Hollywood, including subjugation, demoralization, drug use, HIV, and racism in the community.
