After seeing these images of Taliban members in makeup being circulated, analyzed, and exploited by the white male gaze, Mortezaie appropriated the images, adding more makeup and background imagery to intensify the orientalist aesthetics. This is meant to act as a sort of defiant self-orientalization or self-exploitation to regain power and sovereignty over his and the men in the photograph’s masculinity.
