- As an American citizen, Mortezaie has had to wrestle with the legacy of American imperialism, what it does to countries abroad and how it profoundly upheaved Iranian history through the 1953 coup. Once unraveled by this covert operation, Iranian politics never returned to its previous path and growing conservatism and repressive policies resulted in many people leaving the country en masse. Mortezaie was one of the many, only to find himself in the belly of the Imperial Beast— the US, where repression also reigns supreme.
