This mask adornment depicts Rangda, a figure in Balinese mythology which represents a widowed queen, or in some translations a "witch." A handmade mask like this may be used in traditional Barong dance to act out stories from mythology.
In the past, all hair on a Rangda mask, both the wig and hanging strains, would have been made of hair from a horse's tail, though today many makers use synthetics.
