Bernal Heights - Northeast
This is the neighborhood that collection creator Max Kirkeberg has called home for 45 years, which has proved very handy for his camera. At last count, this neighborhood alone totaled 823 slides. This area could also be called "Peralta Heights," instead of "Northeast Bernal Heights" since the ridge extending from Bernal Hill towards Potrero forms the core of this section and produces a distinctive street grid. The boundaries of the region are Precita Avenue on the north, Peralta Avenue on the west after it changes directions at Mullen Avenue, the James Lich (Highway 101) Freeway on the east, and Powhattan Avenue on the south. Only the northern and western edges have a few Victorians. Most of this area was vacant in the 19th century.
