Around the corner on Portrero Avenue is a bar called Moore's Cocktails. Before the 1960's, gay bars often chose a street that wasn't busy and where people going were less likely to be noticed. See related slide.
The cross street seen in the photo is Harrison Street. This is the old site of a sand and gravel operation. See slide from 2004 for the new housing occupying this block of 16th Street. See Harrison Street slides from 2000 for more of that area.
Eureka Theatre Company was originally housed in a Methodist Church on Market Street near Castro Street. It was destroyed by arson and the Eureka Theatre Company showed up at this site. They are now located at the Golden Gateway near the Embarcadero Center in the old movie theater on Jackson Street. See slide from 2015 for another view.
