18th Street & Hartford Street - 1981
About This Item
18th & Hartford Street, currently Jaguar Books specializing in gay pornography. Note the man in the shadows, cruising. The AIDS crisis had just begun but was not in the news yet. The second floor of this building is a sex club. Neighbors wanted the sex club closed and protested. The issue went to the Board of Supervisors, and Harry Britt, the Supervisor who replaced Harvey Milk, persuaded the Board that it was legitimate recreation in a residentially zoned building. However, in a year or so, all of the gay bath houses and most sex clubs were closed.
