Panorama to the east from Alamo Square at Steiner and Grove Street - 1980

View is to the east. The victorian was built in 1895 for Edward Probert and his parisian born wife Camille Carolyn. Mr. Probert was in his 70's and his wife in her 30's when they moved to their home at 930 Grove Street. A few years later he suffered a stroke and in 1900 weary from his infirmity he committed suicide at age 76 in the attic. His widow lived alone with her servants there until 1921, when she married again. In the late 1960's this address became the French-American bilingual school, and they had built a number of classrooms in what had been one of the largest gardens in the neighborhood. As of today, the classrooms have been torn down and are awaiting construction.
