South at the east side of Fillmore from Hayes Street to Fell Street - 1983

About This Item

The street here is purely residential with the exception of the corner building with a vacant store front. Sacred Heart Church's steeple is visible at the top of the hill. Sacred Heart Church was built in 1897 to serve mostly Irish families. After WWII, membership declined dramatically and by 2000 only 75-100 attend Mass. Half the congregation are African Americans and their gospel choir is famous in San Francisco. It was badly damaged in the 1989 earthquake and has been closed as a Catholic church since then.
