Probert House at 940 Grove Street - 1978
About This Item
Built in 1895, a combination of Queen Anne and period revival styles. Edward Probert was a wealthy landowner in his 70s married to a woman in her 30s. After suffering a debilitating stroke, he killed himself in the attic of this house in 1900. His widow lived here until 1921. Since World War II, the home has had several communal uses: Franciscan Order of Marys (1949-51), a residence for single women over 30 (1951-56), French American Bilingual School, (1956-1978), and Burt Children's Center (1978-2014) for emotionally disturbed children. The home is currently being restored as a single family home. The gardens on the north side of the home were considered the best in the neighborhood, but they were destroyed when the French American Bilingual School built classrooms on the site. See related slide for photo. Classrooms have been razed and the lot is awaiting new construction.
