825-827 Grove Street - 1983

About This Item

South side of Grove, west of Fillmore Street. Victorian homes on this site were torn down and replaced with these buildings late 1930s and early 1940s. Illustrates demand for good housing in the neighborhood but Victorians were out of fashion. There were no laws against tearing down Victorians at the time - the Victorians were larger and detached. After the war, the neighborhood population became increasingly African American; developers probably would not have built these later.
