In 1920, a Greek Orthodox congregation acquired the eastern third of the block formerly owned by Edward Barron and hoped to build a school, an orphanage, and - at the summit - a grand cathedral. As a temporary measure, they built a small church resembling a wooden village church. The apartment building now occupies much of the site. Financial pressures forced them to dispose of the land bit by bit, and they eventually moved to a Valencia Street theater. That site is now known as the Cathedral of the Annunciation.
