625 Scott Street - 1993

About This Item

This block of Scott Street was the back of the Pacific Hebrew Orphan Asylum in the 19th century. When that institution moved to the Ingleside area, this land became available for building, but the Victorian styles were out of fashion, thus everything is early 20th century. This 7-story apartment building was constructed shortly after the 1906 fire when the demand for housing was high and it was considered a very good neighborhood. There are a number of buildings of the same size surrounding Alamo Square that were built at the same time. Note: on this building and others of same size and age, fire escapes were on the exterior of the building.
