South at west side of Steiner from Hayes Street - 1983

About This Item

The building on the far left is the Henry Ohloff house and the white, flat-fronted building is the oldest house in the Alamo Square Historic District - dating from 1869. It is now owned by the Episcopal Church as the Ohloff institution. Queen Anne style built in 1891 as a 5-bedroom single family home. In the 1920s, it became a convalescent home and, at the time, the square tower on the right was built to house machinery for an industrial sized elevator. By the 1950s, this was known as the Hillcrest Sanatorium. In 1958, the building was bought by the Episcopal Church along with two buildings to the north as a recovery home for men aged 18 to 64 with substance abuse problems. They can house up to 52 clients; the program is a 6-month program. It was named after the Episcopal pastor, Reverend Jacob Henry Ohloff, who was known as the skid-row priest. See related slides for the stained glass from the original home.
