722 Steiner Street - 1987, detail

About This Item

Built by Matthew Kavanaugh in 1892 for his own residence. By 1975, it had been condemned and slated for demolition for a parking lot. Like most of the Victorians on the 700 block, it had been subdivided and thoroughly trashed. It has 4,500 square feet. Bought by Michael Shannon and his partner Dr. James Voigeny; they purchased the house in 1975 for $65,000.00. In a paper on the role of gay men in the gentrification of Alamo Square by Michael Toscani, he relates a great tale from an interview with Michael Shannon. When his mother was shown the house in damaged condition, she burst into tears thinking he must have been on drugs to have chosen to buy this house. Little did she know that this house would be so popular for TV and movie scenes, that the house has its own agent. In 2010 the house was offered at $3,999,999,00. Because the garage is around the corner on Grove, they were able to retain the small garden in front.
