1444 McAllister Street - 1995

Modern building in the middle is Victorian Manor, located at 1444 McAllister Street. Next to the vacant lot sits a new building, ironically called "Victorian Manor." Almost surely, Victorians were torn down to build it in the 1950s-1960s. San Francisco Chronicle, Dec. 21, 1995: "Nearly 90 senior citizens are being evicted from their SF homes because an out-of-state corporation plans to renovate the building and raise the rents." The former owner ran into financial trouble and the building wound up in the hands of Bankers Trust, which secured a Seattle firm to run the facility. They plan to spend $2 million to renovate (provide private baths, improve floors & add two penthouses). Currently, about half (45) of the tenants pay less than $700/month. After renovation, only 12 will have low-income rooms - the rest will pay between $1500-$3000 per month. This means most current tenants will be forced to move. The lot with trees beyond Victorian Manor is the parking lot for Third Baptist Church.
