Alemany Public Housing - 2000

Public housing with a some of San Francisco League of Urban Gardeners' gardens at far right. At the top are larger institutional buildings, 801-803 Silver Avenue, formerly Simpson Bible College, which is now a Chinese church/school. 801-803 Silver Avenue was built in 1927 for the Salvation Army as its territorial training college. In 1955, it was bought by Simpson Bible College. In 1988, it was bought by Cornerstone, which uses the site for a church and an 800-bed private school (preschool to 8th grade). It would have cost $13-$15 million to upgrade the whole building to school standards; Cornerstone did not have the money for such renovation, and so the rear of the west wing has been demolished and a new L-shaped classroom building was built. The rest of the building was to be retrofitted to lower standards (Heritage News, March 1995). By 1994, the college was "Cornerstone Evangelical Baptist Church," a Chinese congregation.
