The Golden Fire Plug - 1980
About This Item
The Golden Fire Plug is painted gold every April 18th. After the ceremony at Lotta's Fountain at Market Street and Kearny Street marking the 1906 fire, the dignitaries get into a van and drive to this site and spray paint the hydrant gold. During the 1906 fire, this hydrant had water in it and is given credit for stopping the spread of the fire any further than 20th Street in the Mission District.
