Lyric (Lavender Youth Recreation and Information Center) garage mural - 2004
About This Item
Lyric serves gay, lesbian, and transgender youth. Programs include after school drop-in space and workshops on coping in social environments. The Economic & Career Development Team provide job training, mentorships, and paid internships. Funding comes from a combination of government, corporate, and private donors. In 2006, a survey found that 4/5 of LGBT youth were harassed at school. California has Gay-Straight alliances in 40% of high schools (highest in the nation), and programs such as "Day of Silence" (to promote awareness of the negative effects of bullying) and "Day of Truth" (conservative Christian counterpoint the day after - emphasizing anti-homosexuality belief).
