About This Item

A mini-park dedicated to remembering the homosexuals killed in the Holocaust in Nazi Germany. The Nazis forced gay men to wear pink triangles as an identifier. Dedicated in 2001, it was inspired by an exhibit in the Gay Museum of Berlin and proposed by neighbor Joe Foster. The pink triangle in the photo is pink quartz. Fifteen triangular pylons are Sierra Granite with an inset pink triangle. Each pylon represents 1,000 people; 15 pylons total the estimated number killed in concentration camps. Those who survived faced the existing laws against homosexual behavior post-war and may have ended up in prison. This view looks southeast at the intersection of Castro Street and Market Street, displaying the gigantic rainbow flag.
