Detail of 953-55 Valencia Street upper window above entrance with carved mermaids - 2012
About This Item
Compare with previous slide from 1988; the tree now blocks the left Victorian house. The building on the right has been re-Victorianized. The house on the left, from 1980 to 2008, was a female-only bathhouse called Oscento, which closed when the owner wanted to retire. The front parlor had lockers for clothes with showers beyond that, and then a room with a soaking pool. In the garden were two round cedar saunas, one with steam and one dry. No sex was allowed, but unlike Kabuki Spa, talking was permitted - it became a great place to meet women.
