About This Item
The prominent street catty-corner in the lower left is South Van Ness Avenue, and the other visible street that starts at the lower right corner is Shotwell Street. The bottom two-thirds of the slide are south of 20th Street, characterized by a residential landscape, and north of it is a thin band of an industrial landscape until the Central Freeway. Located just off Shotwell Street near the middle is a slender brick shaft which is the San Francisco Fire Department's training tower at 19th Street and Shotwell Street. To its right and a little above it was the U.S. Steel Building, now a MUNI Car Barn. The blue building on the east side of Shotwell Street in the middle of the slide is Cesar Chavez Elementary School mid-block between 22nd Street and 23rd Street. The Central Freeway runs left to right near the top of the slide. Above the brick 4 or 5 story building, in the middle and on the other side of the freeway, is a double steepled church, St. Joseph's Catholic Church, at 10th Street and Howard Street. The Church is now closed and is being considered for conversion to office space.
