About Earth - A Work in Progress
The Earth provides a visual feast and its study is the realm of Geology. The images in this collection were taken on numerous field trips, research projects and excursions to a great variety of sites of geological interest, during the mid 1960's to about the mid 1980's. They demonstrate the contrast and change in the Bay mudflats and tideland margins of that time to present conditions, and present design modifications in new dam construction. In general, the images include landforms that are representative of major Earth-shaping processes, Earth materials that are shaped by these processes, and structural elements that reflect the action of Earth's tectonic forces. In addition there are numerous examples of our human interaction with the Earth and of the structures resulting from that interaction. (more)

The Dams collection includes photos of major dams of the northwest, southwest and the Sierra, including San Francisco water supply structures and images of the Columbia and Colorado Rivers.
The San Francisco Tidelands Collection includes photos of marsh vegetation and mudflat sediments, drainage pattern evolution, salt production and tideland development in the SF Bay area. Professor Ray Pestrong studied the evolution of drainage patterns on the mudflats and marshes between 1961 and 1965, during which most of these photos...
The Geosciences Collection includes photos of various unique rock types, materials, formations, and associated natural geological phenomena. Collection also includes photos of man-made structures associated with important geological sites and formations.
The Glacier and Rock Collection includes photos depicting the unique formations and occurrences associated with glaciation (past and present) and geology.
The Grand Canyon Collection includes photos of geological and water-related features of the Grand Canyon. Collection also includes photos documenting interaction with these features.
The Mammoth Lakes Collection includes photos of various natural and geological formations and materials associated with Mammoth Lakes, California.
