Lucia Berlin's A Manual For Cleaning Women: Selected Stories, a reading: October 7, 2015

The Poetry Center and the UC Berkeley Department of English co-present this celebration of the publication of Lucia Berlin's A Manual for Cleaning Women: Selected Stories by Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2015, with introductions to Berlin's work by poet Lyn Hejinian and novelist Namwali Serpell, followed by readings of four stories by her friends and fellow writers Stephen Emerson, Gloria Frym, August Kleinzahler, and Mimi Pond at the Maud Fife Room in Wheeler Hall, UC Berkeley.

Lyn Hejinian remarks on Lucia Berlin's work and introduces Namwali Serpell. Serpell discusses her connection to Berlin's writing, then introduces Stephen Emerson. Emerson remarks on Berlin's life and his experience with her as a friend and later as the editor of her Selected Stories. Emerson introduces Gloria Frym. Frym remarks on her friendship with Berlin. She recalls the time Berlin failed the CBEST test for writing an essay on Velcro that presumably mocked the test. Frym reads "Sex Appeal" from A Manual for Cleaning Women: Selected Stories. Emerson introduces Mimi Pond. Pond remarks on Berlin's works and reads "502." Emerson introduces August Kleinzahler. Kleinzahler remarks on the incomparability of Berlin's writing style and reads "Point of View." Emerson concludes by reading "Carpe Diem."
