Jennifer Foerster: September 29, 2016

The Poetry Center, SFSU Fine Arts Gallery, and American Indian Studies at SFSU co-present Jennifer Elise Foerster, reading and in conversation with the audience. Foerster reads from Leaving Tulsa (University of Arizona Press, 2013) and new work. The event was held in conjunction with the exhibition When I Remember I See Red: California Contemporary Native American Art. The artworks in the background are from the 'Kinky Kachinas' series' by Mooshka (Kevin Cata).

Steve Dickison welcomes the audience. He reads Orlando White's poem "Unwritten," from his book LETTERRS (Nightboat Books, 2015) and introduces Jennifer Foerster. Foerster reads "Tracing Magdelena" from her book Leaving Tulsa, an essay written for a panel presentation in Boulder, Colorado, with the theme "Wild Mind, Wild Form," and new poems inspired by the visual arts: "Touring the Earth Gallery," "The Painter," "Inheritance," "Land Art," "Descent."

Jennifer Foerster takes questions from the audience on being alone, her creative process, keeping a journal, working in other art forms (specifically pottery) and her love of the visual arts, serial forms, generating the speaker of her poems, the space between formlessness and form, the role of the poet, studying and speaking Muscogee, the origin of the word for "wild" in that language, and her experiences at a Lannan Foundation artist's residency in Marfa, Texas.
