Pierre Joris on Paul Celan: March 18, 2015

Peter Maravelis welcomes the audience. Steve Dickison introduces Pierre Joris, then Joris speaks about Paul Celan and reads his translations from Celan's poems: "Death Fugue," "Le Livre de Luap Nalec," "The Meridian," "Breathturn," "You May Confidently," "By the Undreamt Etched," "Into the Furrows," "In the Rivers North of the Future," "Before Your Late Face," "Down Melancholy's Rapids," and "Threadsuns." Nicole Peyrafitte reads "Line the Wordcaves." Joris reads "Todtnauberg," "Light Duress," "Strew Ochre in my Eyes," "Leap Centuries," "Menorah Poem From Berlin," "One Reading Branch," "The World, The World," "What Bitters Herein," "Crocus from the Hospital Scene," and "Vine Growers Dig Up, Dig Under." Pierre Joris then takes questions from the audience and remarks, among other subjects, on Celan's style of reading, his hospitalizations, and his translations of Emily Dickinson. Joris also remarks on his near fifty-year engagement translating Paul Celan's poetry.
