Cosmic Diaspora and Steve Dalachinsky: April 19, 2018

The Poetry Center presents Cosmic Diaspora and Steve Dalachinsky, reading and in performance. Cosmic Diaspora (Jake Marmer, poetry; John Schott, guitar; and Joshua Horowitz, keyboard, accordion) opens with a set of songs shaped around poems by Marmer, paralleling immigration and science fiction. Steve Dalachinsky follows with an extended reading, much of it dedicated to musicians, from The Superintendent's Eye (Autonomedia/Unbearable Books, 2000), The Mantis (Iniquita Press, 2009), and works in manuscript.

After Steve Dickison's introduction, Steve Dalachinsky opens with a poem dedicated to Cecil Taylor: "cecil taylor at the iridium, 2006 (I am faithful to the music...)." He reads "bone boy's holiday," #68 from The Superintendent's Eye, and "cecil taylor-derek bailey duo at tonic" from The Mantis. Then, reading from manuscript: "for ayler," and "so cozy, a solo approach to the stage." Joined by John Schott on guitar, "vocalese" (for Jeanne Lee). Reading solo again, "yoshiko," dedicated to the late mother of his wife, poet Yuko Otomo, "a promise is a promise" (after a lecture by Jacques Derrida), and (joined once again by Schott) "son of the sun (after magic)."

After Steve Dickison's introduction, Cosmic Diaspora performs a set of original songs, with Jake Marmer performing his poetry to music by John Schott (guitar) and Joshua Horowitz (keyboard and accordion). Marmer opens by reading a introductory text ("All science fiction is a form of immigrant literature. Every time I say 'spaceship,' I mean 'suitcase'....") followed by the trio performing: "Turbine," "Circle Maker," "Taxi," "Anima," "Nigun (for Cecil Taylor)" "Bar Stool Ellen," "Tohu Bohu," and "Please Don't Panic at the Disco."
