Juliana Spahr and Jasmine Gibson: February 8, 2019

The Poetry Center presents Jasmine Gibson and Juliana Spahr reading from their works. Jasmine Gibson opens, reading poems from her newly published book, Don't Let Them See Me Like This (Nightboat Books, 2018) as well as newer work from manuscript. Juliana Spahr reads an extended excerpt from a new, as yet untitled, work in progress. This event is the second evening of a double program, and part of The Poetry Center's In Common Writers Series, supported by the Walter & Elise Haas Fund.

After an introduction by Steve Dickison, Jasmine Gibson thanks the audience, then reads "Primitive Accumulation," "Pluto in Scorpio," Spinoza's Ladder," "Oxblood," "Stop Texting Me ("You really think you're free when there's ghosts...")," "Verde, Te Quiero Verde," "Ocean," and "Stop Texting Me ("Thousands of militants in the streets...")," all from Don't Let Them See Me Like This. She then reads "There is a limp in my voice" and "All my past love lives," two unpublished poems, and "Untitled (For John + Taylor)," recently published in Datableed. She finishes by reading "Love Life" and "Hollow Delta," from Don't Let Them See Me Like This.

After a brief introduction by poet and novelist Owen Hill of Moe's Books, Juliana Spahr prefaces her reading, describing a "commie camp" where she first met Jasmine Gibson. She then reads from an untitled work in progress involving the intertwinings of political activism, academia, and social media.
