Keith Donnell Jr. and Antony Fangary: September 23, 2021

The Poetry Center presents Keith Donnell Jr. and Antony Fangary, reading and in conversation, at the Poetry Center reading room, San Francisco State University. Fangary reads from his manuscript entitled Complexity of the Foreigner, and Donnell reads from his newly published book Move (Nomadic Press, 2021). After a short break the poets field questions from the in-house audience.

Antony Fangary (00:20:32)

Antony Fangary reads from his unpublished manuscript, Aoudit il Khoagha / Complexity of the Foreigner, with its poems in series revolving around Coptic-American identity and religion. Some titles are given in both Arabic and English. 

Keith Donnell Jr. (00:24:12)

Keith Donnell Jr. gives a brief introduction to his first poetry collection, Move (Nomadic Press, 2021), and reads from the book, beginning with “Kitchen Table Séance” and closing with the last poem of the book, “Electric Sliding for a New World,” a largely found language piece combining elements from the songs “Lift Every Voice and Sing” and “Electric Boogie.”

Conversation (00:36:47)

Following their readings, the poets respond in turn to questions from the audience and discuss topics such as Fangary's Coptic inheritance, aspects of language use, various writing processes, effects of performance on the work, and matters of culture and family.
