Audre Lorde Award Reading: Elizabeth Rosas, Samantha Cosentino, and Lillian Giles: September 10, 2020

The Poetry Center presents Audre Lorde Creative Writing Award-winner Elizabeth Rosas and Award-finalists Samantha Cosentino, Lillian Giles, and Bradley Penner (the latter opting not to present his poetry), reading and in conversation. The emcee, for this first of many Poetry Center remote-access programs to take place during the COVID-19 pandemic, is Poetry Center staff and MFA student TreVaughn Roach-Carter. Bradley Penner, declining the invitation to read his poems, instead presents a statement in solidarity with the George Floyd Uprising in response to racialized violence and structural social injustice, and in support with black lives and Black Lives Matter-related activism. Giles, Cosentino, and Rosas each read their poems and then speak with each other and respond to questions from the audience.

Lillian Giles, in her first public reading, presents her prose poem "Mountainside."

Samantha Cosentino (00:09:54)

Samantha Cosentino reads her poems: "A Brief Conjuring," "Cry Uninhabited," "Maria," then several poems that stem from her work with ESL students: "The Infinitive," "Where Does the Sun Rise Here?," "Been" (in multiple parts, each bearing that title), and the sequence concluding with "Prepositions of Place for Immigrants from Argentina."

Elizabeth Rosas (00:09:54)

Elizabeth Rosas, as winner of The Poetry Center's Audre Lorde Creative Writing Award for 2020, concludes the presentations with a reading of her poetry. After dedicating her reading to her mother, "who would have been 71 years old today," Rosas reads: "More About That Field," "God Juice," "Teenage Pastoral," "And If You Wrong Us, Shall We Not Revenge?" (based on Diana the Hunter of Bus Drivers, of Ciudad Juárez), "Things She Had to Down," "Upon Leaving the Cemetery," "The Island of Dolls," "What was it like...," "She told me something in a whisper...," and "View of the Sierra Nevada Highland."

Following the poets' readings, TreVaughn Roach-Carter welcomes Giles, Cosentino, Rosas, and Penner back on screen together, to converse with one another and respond to questions from the audience.
