Simon J. Ortiz: November 19, 1975
The Poetry Center presents Simon J. Ortiz, in this early reading of his work at San Francisco State University. Ortiz reads from A Good Journey (Turtle Island Foundation, 1977), a book he describes as composed of poems and narratives — stories from the tradition of his Acoma Pueblo Nation homeplace, and from his first book of poetry, Going for the Rain (Harper & Row, 1976). The event took place in the erstwhile Barbary Coast Room in the César Chavez Student Center, and was organized by Poetry Center director Lewis MacAdams, who provides the introduction.
Note: Ortiz's reading was preceded by a reading by poet Lyn Lifshin; that recording has not yet been digitized, and will eventually be added to the full-program video.
