Ari Banias and Demian Dinéyazhi’ at Beyond Binary: October 6, 2022

The Poetry Center, along with the Fine Arts Gallery, SF State, in conjunction with the exhibition Beyond Binary, present Poetry Center Mazza Writer in Residence for Fall 2022, Ari Banias, and poet and transdisciplinaryartist — and contributor to the exhibition — Demian Dinéyazhi’. They each read from their poems and engage in conversation with the audience. The exhibition was on view from September 17 through October 27, with this event being one of several public programs taking place in the space of the gallery amidst the twenty contributing artists' works. Following opening remarks by Steve Dickison, Banias is introduced by Tatiana Luboviski-Acosta, and Dinéyazhi’ by Leonard Reidelbach. Following their readings the poets respond to questions from the audience.

Ari Banias (00:15:16)

Ari Banias reads from his first book, Anybody, the poems "To the God of Sobriety," "When you Look At a Fence," "The Men," and "Pronoun Study." He reads what he notes is an older poem, written in 2007, included in Anybody and titled "Who is Ghost," then closes the reading with the poem "Playa Vista," from his second book, A Symmetry.

Demian DinéYazhi' (00:20:51)

Demian DinéYazhi' reads an untitled new work, and follows with work from their latest book, We Left Them Nothing — an experimental long-form book of poetry, self-published in 2021. They begin with "The Landing of the Homophobes," based off a painting depicting the landing of the pilgrims. Highlighting colonization's synonymity with introductions of trans and homophobic violence and how colonization is a disruption, DinéYazhi' ponders and asks what history we're fighting for.

Conversation (00:14:24)

Opening with remarks on visits to Fire Island in New York, Ari Banias and Demian Dinéyazhi’ respond to audience members questions regarding non-binary concepts in conjunction with indigenous multi-spiritual self identity, trans history, queer history, and social and political constructs.
