Erica Hunt and Marty Ehrlich at Center for New Music: April 4, 2014

The Poetry Center presents Erica Hunt and Marty Ehrlich in performance at the Center for New Music, in downtown San Francisco. Hunt kicks off the event with a solo reading from A Day and its Approximates (Chax Press, 2013) and the manuscript to the subsequently published Veronica: A Suite in X Parts (selva oscura press, 2019). Ehrlich performs a four-part suite based on four songs by Bob Dylan, on clarinet and alto saxophone. The two follow with a collaborative poetry and music performance. Steve Dickison provides the introductions.

Erica Hunt (00:20:51)

Erica Hunt presents a solo reading, opening from her newly published book, A Day and its Approximates, with the poem "Unit." She follows with poems from the manuscript of what would later be published as Veronica: A Suite In X Parts. For the last of the poems she is joined by several other voices from the audience.

Marty Ehrlich (00:15:39)

Marty Ehrlich performs on clarinet and voice a four-part suite based on four songs by Bob Dylan: "Lay Down Your Weary Tune," "A Long Time Gone" (originally, he notes, recorded by Odetta), "I'll Keep It With Mine," and "Mr. Tambourine Man." He then performs a solo improvisation on alto sax.

Erica Hunt and Marty Ehrlich (00:25:06)

Erica Hunt explains that within the last five years of her and Marty Ehrlich's thirty-year relationship, they have begun collaboratively performing music and poetry together. Hunt begins the performance with the poem "The Awful Truth" as Ehrlich plays clarinet. Hunt exclaims, "don't yuck my yum," with the next poem as Ehrlich begins to improvise on alto saxophone. The third poem begins in a sing-song way, "running through the playground with my eyes shut," with Ehrlich again on clarinet. "Natural Mathematics" follows, with the line, "no one ever knows how much time they have," repeating throughout the poem. They continue their collaborative performance with several more poems, including "Energy Music" and "Afternotes for Cecil Taylor," with Ehrlich switching between clarinet and alto sax.
