Kit Robinson and James Sherry: March 21, 2014

The Poetry Center presents Kit Robinson and James Sherry, reading from their work at Meridian Gallery, near Union Square in downtown San Francisco. Kit Robinson, longtime resident of the Bay Area, reads from an unpublished manuscript of poetry entitled 57 Varieties, and from a newly published series of collaborations with Ted Greenwald (A Mammal of Style, Roof Books, 2013). James Sherry, visiting from New York City, reads from the manuscript of a work subsequently published under the title Entangled Bank: Conceptual Memoir of Language Ecosystems (Chax Press, 2015). Steve Dickison introduces the poets.

Kit Robinson (00:33:37)

Kit Robinson begins the reading by talking about how he has been writing much over the past six months. Because of this, he will be mostly reading new, as yet unread, and unpublished work during the event. He reads from a manuscript titled: 57 Varieties. 

Robinson goes on to read from a collaboration with Ted Greenwald, A Mammal of Style. Each section read adopts a particular form, including haiku, sestina, and sonnets. As he describes, it took 10 years to create the work. He reads three poems, titled: "March 27," "April 17th," and "June 5th." 

James Sherry (00:28:59)

James Sherry reads from his soon-to-be published book entitled: Entangled Bank: Conceptual Memoir of Language Ecosystems. The work begins with two quotes: one from Darwin's Origin of the Species and the other from James Baldwin. Each part of the work includes a unique epigraph as well.  As Sherry describes, his book was written with the intention of "lacking style."
