Eric Sneathen, Noah Ross, Violet Spurlock: September 30, 2023

The Poetry Center presents Noah Ross, Violet Spurlock, and Eric Sneathen reading at Artists' Television Access in the Mission District of San Francisco. Noah Ross reads from the work-in-progress manuscript to The Dogs (Krupskaya, 2024) as well as new poems. Violet Spurlock reads from her soon-to-appear book, In Lieu of Solutions (Futurepoem, 2023). Eric Sneathen reads from his newly published book, Don’t Leave Me This Way (Nightboat Books, 2023) and from Minor Works (MO0ON/IO, 2022), and shows a clip from the video 1983, The Forum, which includes the only known footage of Gaëtan Dugas, a key figure in Sneathen's new book and in the early days of the AIDS epidemic. Steve Dickison introduces the poets to the avid, full-house audience.

Noah Ross (00:14:59)

Noah Ross reads from the manuscript to his forthcoming book The Dogs, written in dialogue with various sources including Hervé Guibert’s brief autobiographical book Les chiens (1982), queer werewolves, and the TV series Teen Wolf. He follows with unpublished new poems, including “This Is the Story of my Life: A Novel.”

Violet Spurlock (00:23:59)

Violet Spurlock reads the first two sections—“Epidermal Ripple Pool” and “Gender Preppers/Life Swap”—from her Other Future’s Award-winning book In Lieu of Solutions. She follows these with an excerpt from the 6th section, “The Unseduced.”

Eric Sneathen (00:34:06)

Eric Sneathen begins with a brief outline of his new book, Don’t Leave Me This Way, before reading the poem “Exhausted Autumn” by Kevin Killian. He follows this with poems from the first section of Don't Leave Me This Way, “Telemachy," which he notes is deeply indebted to Jocelyn Saidenberg. Sneathen then shows a clip from the video 1983, The Forum, produced by AIDS Vancouver. The excerpt (c. 5:45–12:20) focuses on Gaëtan Dugas, who was falsely identified as AIDS "Patient Zero” in Randy Shilts’s influential 1987 book And The Band Played On: Politics, People and the AIDS Epidemic. After the clip, Sneathen reads from the Gaëtan section of Don’t Leave Me This Way. He finishes with another nod to Kevin Killian, reading “Minna Street” from his own chapbook Minor Works.
