Lawrence Ferlinghetti — USA: Poetry, NET Outtakes Series: December 13, 1965

The Poetry Center presents Lawrence Ferlinghetti, at City Lights Bookstore and publishers (Ferlinghetti co-founded the San Francisco bookshop, with Peter Martin, in 1953), at his home nearby in North Beach, walking the neighborhood streets with his dog, Homer, and reading from his poetry. The footage to this very brief outtakes program was filmed on December 13, 1965. 

The "Second Edition" NET Outtakes Series programs were made in 1978 by The Poetry Center's American Poetry Archives staff. Assembled from unused 16-millimeter black and white film footage shot during production of the original 15-minute USA: Poetry television programs (produced in 1965–66 for National Educational Television by Richard O. Moore of the film unit of KQED-TV, San Francisco), the outtakes footage is arranged here in the original shooting sequence. Note, some silent footage appears among the outtakes. Funding for The Poetry Center's NET Outtakes Series was provided by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Lawrence Ferlinghetti (00:08:05)

Lawrence Ferlinghetti is filmed on site at City Lights Books, in his home office, and on the streets of North Beach together with his dog, Homer. He reads from three poems: the first of these published as a pamphlet titled To Fuck Is to Love Again (Kyrie Eleison Kerista) or, The Situation in the West, Followed by a Holy Proposal, 1965, "The Jig Is Up" (featuring a fortuitous cameo appearance by a passing truck), and "Dog."
