Denise Levertov — USA: Poetry, NET Outtakes Series: March 20, 1966

The Poetry Center presents Denise Levertov, speaking of the nature of her work and reading from her poems, with her husband Mitchell Goodman commenting, and son Nickolai and a family friend, Robert Goldman, also present. Richard O. Moore engages Levertov and the others with questions and comments throughout. The footage was filmed March 20, 1966, at Levertov's apartment in New York City.

The "Second Edition" NET Outtakes Series programs were made in 1978 by The Poetry Center's American Poetry Archives staff. Assembled from unused 16-millimeter black and white film footage shot during production of the original 15-minute USA: Poetry television programs (produced in 1965–66 for National Educational Television by Richard O. Moore of the film unit of KQED-TV, San Francisco), the outtakes footage is arranged here in the original shooting sequence. Note, some silent footage appears among the outtakes. Funding for The Poetry Center's NET Outtakes Series was provided by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Denise Levertov (00:51:09)

Denise Levertov speaks, in response to questions from Richard O. Moore, on the process of her writing poetry, aspects of living in New York City and living with her writer husband, Mitchell Goodman, on being British and American, on being associated for some time with Robert Creeley, Robert Duncan, and Charles Olson, and growing up in England, studying ballet and leaving dance. She reads from her poems: including an abbreviated start at "Two Angels," "Merritt Parkway," "The Solitude,"  "A Note to Olga, 1966" "Song for Ishtar," and "The Elves." The program closes with Levertov cutting the hair of a young man in military uniform ("a political scientist, his name is Robert Goldman"), with Moore's questions and Levertov's responses continuing.
